Experiencing a Dental Emergency? Don’t Delay..Call Us Today!
Because you never know when a dental emergency can occur – we are open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday to Friday and Saturday: 8:30 am – 2:00 pm.
The minutes following a dental emergency can be critical to the health of your teeth and can sometimes determine if you keep or lose a tooth. This is why we have prepared these notes so you can know what to do if any dental emergencies occur.
For all enquiries after hours, a partnering practice handles the immediate need but the ongoing consults are done by Northern Beaches Dental.
If you are experiencing a toothache you need to rinse your mouth with warm salt water and floss in-between teeth to ensure you remove anything trapped in your gums. If you find that the gums are swollen, placing an ice pack on your cheek will help with this. Finally, contact your dentist for further instructions.
Do not apply heat to the area or drink any hot liquids as this will cause a burning sensation. Additionally, please do not place any pain medication (painkillers, aspiring, etc) directly on the area.
If your gums are bleeding, floss and rinse with warm salt water. If the wound is larger, press a towel or gauze firmly on it for 5 to 10 minutes. Please seek immediate medical attention if the bleeding continues. If your gums are swollen, placing an ice pack on your cheek will help with this. Finally, contact your dentist for further instructions.
Do not use tissues when wiping the blood or drink any hot liquids or apply any heat to the area. Please do not poke or pop any abscesses or pimples.
You need to call a dentist immediately and be looked at within an hour of the accident.
However, while you wait for that, rinse your mouth with lukewarm water. If you find that the gums are swollen, placing an ice pack on your cheek will help with this. If there is bleeding, press a towel or gauze firmly on it for 5 to 10 minutes.
If you can, try to find the missing part of the tooth and store this either in a container of your saliva or milk. Do not use water, or any other liquids.

Please refrain from trying to pull the tooth out or wiggle it in your mouth. Avoid using heat on the area and do not drink any hot liquids.
You need to call a dentist immediately and be looked at within an hour of the accident. If it was a baby tooth that either fell out naturally, or was knocked out, the dentist will need to check it.

Refrain from touching or pulling at the gum or soft tissues in the area. Avoid using heat on the area and do not drink any hot liquids.
If there is a broken wire that is hurting you (poking your gum), bend the wire so it is in a better, and more comfortable spot. Do not cut any pieces of the wire. If the wire is deep in the gums or cheek, leave it in, the dentist will help with this.
If the bracket fell off, keep a hold of this and give it to the dentist.
Finally, call the dentist immediately
If you have an infection from your wisdom, this may be aided by improving oral hygiene. The dentist cleaning the area, paired with antibiotics will help treat this. However, if wisdom teeth are not removed, the infection may return.
During an extraction, local anaesthetic will be used to numb the area. However, a sedative may be used if required.
A simple extraction can be performed if the tooth has broken through the gum. The process for when a wisdom tooth is below the gum line involves cutting through the gum to remove a portion of the bone in order to reach the root. Because of this, the tooth is to be cut into smaller pieces, minimising the size of the whole to then be stitched up.
A failed dental implant can be painful and unsettling, especially if it becomes loose or shows signs of infection. This can occur due to bone loss, trauma, or improper healing. Prompt treatment is essential to prevent further damage to the surrounding gum and bone tissue. Our emergency dental team will assess the implant, manage any infection or inflammation, and stabilise the area to protect your oral health and comfort.
Sudden or severe tooth sensitivity can indicate exposed nerves, enamel damage, or underlying decay. If hot, cold, or sweet foods trigger sharp pain, it is important to seek urgent dental care. Left untreated, sensitivity can worsen and lead to more serious complications. We identify the cause quickly and provide targeted treatment to reduce discomfort and protect the affected tooth.
Jaw and facial pain can be caused by a range of dental issues, including bite problems, impacted teeth, infections, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. This type of pain can interfere with eating, speaking, and sleeping. Our emergency dental services focus on diagnosing the source of the discomfort and providing fast relief while addressing the underlying cause to prevent ongoing problems.
Dental infections are serious and require immediate attention. Symptoms may include swelling, throbbing pain, bad taste, fever, or facial tenderness. If left untreated, infections can spread beyond the mouth and affect overall health. Our emergency care prioritises controlling the infection, relieving pain, and protecting surrounding teeth and tissues through safe and effective treatment.
A loose crown or veneer can expose the underlying tooth, increasing the risk of decay, sensitivity, and further damage. It can also affect your bite and appearance. Emergency treatment helps secure or replace the restoration quickly, restoring function and protecting your tooth from additional complications while maintaining the look of your smile.
